He Leadeth Me

Joseph H. Gilmore

Joseph H. Gilmore (1834–1918) was an American Baptist minister, professor, and author. In 1862, during the darkest days of the American Civil War, Gilmore was leading a mid-week prayer meeting in Philadelphia. He spoke on the comforting words of Psalm 23, focusing on how God leads His people even through the shadow of death. After the service, while sitting in his friends' parlor, the inspiration remained so strong that he grabbed a pencil and scribbled the words of 'He Leadeth Me' on a scrap of paper. Without his knowledge, his wife sent the poem to a Christian publication, where it was set to music and became a worldwide anthem of comfort.

He leadeth me: O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate'er I do, where'er I be,
still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
He leadeth me, he leadeth me;
by his own hand he leadeth me:
his faithful follower I would be,
for by his hand he leadeth me.
Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom,
sometimes where Eden's flowers bloom,
by waters calm, o'er troubled sea,
still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me. Refrain
Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine,
nor ever murmur nor repine;
content, whatever lot I see,
since 'tis my God that leadeth me. Refrain
And when my task on earth is done,
when, by thy grace, the victory's won,
e'en death's cold wave I will not flee,
since God through Jordan leadeth me. Refrain
