Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Catherine Winkworth (1827–1878) was a pioneering English translator and activist who passionately believed that the great chorales of the German Reformation could revitalize spiritual life in Britain. In an era when women were rarely recognized in scholarship, she translated hundreds of German hymns with exquisite poetic elegance, single-handedly introducing the English-speaking world to masterworks like 'Now Thank We All Our God' and 'Praise to the Lord, the Almighty'. She was also a tireless champion of women's higher education, dedicating her life to opening doors of intellectual and spiritual leadership for women.
