Silent Night

Joseph Mohr; trans. John F. Young

An Austrian Roman Catholic priest (1792–1848). On Christmas Eve in 1818, the organ at his parish church in Oberndorf was broken. Desperate to provide music for the Midnight Mass, Mohr brought a poem he had written two years earlier to his schoolteacher friend, Franz Xaver Gruber, and asked him to write a melody for guitar. The result was 'Silent Night' ('Stille Nacht'), sung for the first time that night around the altar.

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
