Restlessness can appear as racing thoughts, constant activity, dissatisfaction, or the feeling that we should be somewhere else. Sometimes it signals a practical need for change; sometimes it reveals fear, overwork, unresolved grief, or a soul searching for what only God can give. Scripture invites us to listen without letting restlessness become our master.
Scripture for reflection
Psalm 62:1–8
1To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him [cometh] my salvation. 2He only [is] my rock and my salvation; [he is] my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. 3How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall [shall ye be, and as] a tottering fence. 4They only consult to cast [him] down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah. 5My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation [is] from him. 6He only [is] my rock and my salvation: [he is] my defence; I shall not be moved. 7In God [is] my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, [and] my refuge, [is] in God. 8Trust in him at all times; [ye] people, pour out your heart before him: God [is] a refuge for us. Selah.
Reflection
The psalmist repeatedly directs his soul toward quiet trust and pours out his heart to God, who is refuge and steady ground.
Matthew 11:28–30
28¶ Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.
Reflection
Jesus offers rest through relationship and apprenticeship. His yoke gives direction without the crushing weight of self-salvation.
Living this truth
Begin by becoming curious rather than condemning yourself. Is your body depleted? Is there a conversation you are avoiding, a decision that needs counsel, or stimulation that never allows silence? Meet physical needs and bring spiritual questions to God. Rest in Scripture is not laziness; it is a declaration that God remains God while we stop. Create a small boundary around noise, work, or scrolling. If a faithful change is needed, take one measured step rather than fleeing impulsively. Lasting rest is not found in perfect control but in being held by Christ.
Three practices for today
- Name what your restlessness may be trying to communicate.
- Choose twenty minutes without work, scrolling, or background noise and think about God's goodness.
- Take one wise step toward a needed change, then stop for the day.
A prayer
Father God, show me what needs attention and what needs release. Quiet the noise that pulls me from You and teach my soul to rest in Your care. In Jesus Name. Amen.
