Jesus Paid It All

Elvina M. Hall

Elvina M. Hall (1820–1889) was a dedicated Methodist laywoman in Baltimore. On a spring Sunday morning in 1865, while sitting in the church choir loft during a long pastoral prayer, she felt overwhelmed by a deep sense of gratitude for Christ's sacrifice. Lacking paper, she grabbed the flyleaf of her hymnbook and hastily scribbled: 'I hear the Savior say, Thy strength indeed is small...' When she showed it to her pastor after the service, he realized it perfectly fit a new choir melody he was trying to pair with lyrics, resulting in the classic 'Jesus Paid It All'.

I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness, watch and pray
Find in me thine all in all
Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow
For nothing good have I
Whereby thy grace to claim
I'll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvary's Lamb
And now complete in him
My robe his righteousness
Close sheltered 'neath his side
I am divinely blest
When from my dying bed
My ransomed soul shall rise
Jesus died my soul to save
Shall rend the vaulted skies
